What kind of icebreakers can I do?

I’m doing a parent workshop for my class (it’s a group project) and I have to do a icebreaker. Any suggestion on what I can use or create for my icebreaker. My theme is Building a Love for Books. It’s for my childcare class CCT 257 children Literature.

Who Am I?
Pre-make tags with each tag having the name of a literary character (or whatever). These tags will be placed on the back of each guest as they arrive. This is done without them knowing who they are. They are to go around the room asking questions as to who they might be. Questions like “am I a male?” They can only ask one yes or no question and make only one guess as to Who they are with each person that they talk to, then they have to move on to another person. They can come visit previous players once they’ve visited another player.

Knots
The group clumps up tightly and each person takes two hands (cannot be of the same person). They then have to work themselves into a circle without breaking hands.

2 Truths & a Lie
People write down two truths about themselves and a lie. Then introduce the three “facts” to the rest of the group who tries to guess which one is a lie.

Fear in a Hat
Group members write personal fears anonymously on pieces of paper which are collected. Then each person randomly selects and reads someone else’s fear to the group and explains how the person might feel. Fosters interpersonal empathy.

Screamer
In a circle, people look at ground, then on “heads up” look into someone else’s eyes. If 2 people are looking at each other, they scream and are both out. Continue to see who is last – hilarious.

Parenting Beliefs, Behaviors, and Parent-Child Relations: A Cross-Cultural Perspective

Parenting Beliefs, Behaviors, and Parent-Child Relations: A Cross-Cultural Perspective

$3.95

For years, researchers have been studying parental thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and the relationships that parents form and maintain with their children. Much of this research has been focused directly on the parent. But researchers are also determined to demonstrate that parents’ cognitions about children and childrearing, parenting behaviors, and the quality of parent-child relationships actually contribute to the well- or ill-being of their offspring. In short, researchers the world over often find themselves in the business of demonstrating that parents matter. The purpose of this book, however, is to present a rather simple argument. Parents’ thoughts about childrearing and the ways in which they interact with children to achieve particular parenting or developmental goals, are culturally determined. Within any culture, children are shaped by the physical and social settings within which they live, culturally regulated customs and childrearing practices, and culturally based belief systems. The psychological "meaning" attributed to any given social behavior is, in large part, a function of the ecological niche within which it is produced. Clearly, it is the case that there are some cultural universals. All parents want their children to be healthy and to feel secure. However, "healthy" and "unhealthy," at least in the psychological sense of the term, can have different meanings from culture to culture. In an effort to shed light on the culture of parenting and on parenting from a cultural and cross-cultural perspective, a group of internationally esteemed scholars from Asia, Europe, and North America exchanged information at a workshop sponsored by the International Society for the Study of Behavioural Development. This three-day meeting took place at Seoul National University, South Korea in June 2003. The chapters in this book are drawn from the presentations of a diverse collection of researchers, each of whom presents a unique perspective on cultural manifestations of parenting beliefs and behaviors and parent-child relationships as well as on cross-cultural comparisons related to these topics.

Doing our best as a parent is not what God wants. He wants us to do His will. The fact is most Christian parents today did not have a godly example given to them by their own parents, leaving them ignorant and confused over God’s will in raising children. God, knowing that this would occur, gave us all we need within His Word to instruct us. This book will help parents with practical tools in: Having a strong spiritual foundation. Working together (if married) as a team. Ways to meet our children’s emotional needs without compromising our faith. How to disciple your children. How to instill characters such as personal responsibility and self-control. How to start over. Every Christian parent wants to do the right thing but parenting according to God’s Word does not come naturally. One needs to be discipled either by parental example or by deliberate instruction. Being a parent is one of the most important tasks God has given us to do here on earth for Him. We must choose to rely upon His Word and His grace to accomplish this important undertaking. In their new book "The Happy Family," NY Times #1 bestselling authors Linda and Richard Eyre argue that the social problems that are ravishing America–family breakups, escalating substance abuse, teen pregnancy–are the unfortunate result of hearts and minds turned away from the essentials of parenting, marriage and families. In this landmark work, the Eyres help parents to understand what is happening to their families and why parenting is so difficult today. The eyres present powerful, practical parenting practices, including how to: * Make a conscious recommitment to return your heart to the priority of marriage and family * Teach understanding and discretionary use of the culture at large * Reinvent time management with an emphasis on family * Make communication your constant goal * Create identity, security and motivation for children through family traditions and responsibilities * Use "values therapy" in which the focus shifts away from wrong to the rewards and fulfillment of right.

Parenting for Primates

Parenting for Primates

$37.14

What parent hasn’t wondered "What do I do now?" as a baby cries or a teenager glares? Making babies may come naturally, but knowing how to raise them doesn’t. As primatologist-turned-psychologist Harriet J. Smith shows in this lively safari through the world of primates, parenting by primates isn’t instinctive, and that’s just as true for monkeys and apes as it is for humans. In this natural history of primate parenting, Smith compares parenting by nonhuman and human primates. In a narrative rich with vivid anecdotes derived from interviews with primatologists, from her own experience breeding cottontop tamarin monkeys for over thirty years, and from her clinical psychology practice, Smith describes the thousand and one ways that primate mothers, fathers, grandparents, siblings, and even babysitters care for their offspring, from infancy through young adulthood. Smith learned the hard way that hand-raised cottontop tamarins often mature into incompetent parents. Her observation of inadequate parenting by cottontops plus her clinical work with troubled human families sparked her interest in the process of how primates become "good-enough" parents. The story of how she trained her tamarins to become adequate parents lays the foundation for discussions about the crucial role of early experience on parenting in primates, and how certain types of experiences, such as anxiety and social isolation, can trigger neglectful or abusive parenting. Smith reveals diverse strategies for parenting by primates, but she also identifies parenting behaviors crucial to the survival and development of primate youngsters that have stood the test of time.

It’s a sad belief to think that you have nothing to do with how successful your children will become as adults. Meet Mark and Becky, two normal parents trying their best to raise normal kids. But as their children grow older, these sincere parents have a growing sense that they are in over their heads. After all, it’s not like children come with a 445-page instruction manual or a 24-hour customer service line. Yet the problems and difficulties Mark and Becky face are not unusual or far-fetched–in fact, they are the normal, day-to-day battles most parents share. So why is it still so hard? Because no one showed them the basics of good parenting. In Confident Parenting, Jim Burns weaves together the fictional story of Mark and Becky with common sense and accessible parenting tips and strategies. Part story, part information, each chapter explores a different aspect of parenting, such as balancing self-care with family care, and includes the ingredients involved in proper discipline. With more than 20 years of experience counseling hundreds of families and children, Burns offers time-tested advice in a painless and creative way, helping parents everywhere lay a positive foundation for raising healthy families.

Any parent who has shuddered at the thought of navigating an adolescent through the teen years will benefit from this book. Gale Dreas, a real-life Mom as well as a professional, shares her own stories, experiences and life-lessons while she and her husband navigate their two teenage boys through "typical" teenage situations including friendships, sibling rivalry, sexuality, drinking, driving, money, trouble with the police, teenage fights, parties and relationships. Each section in this book provides a complete "short story" concerning real-life situations which the author has experienced. A "Tools Used" section concludes each story, summarizing specific and general lessons learned and suggestions for improvement. When serious problems occur, she brings the reader right along by sharing her thoughts, anxieties, confusion, fears and finally, her solutions. This practical arrangement moves readers through the chapters at a comfortable pace as each section is easily read in one sitting. The author combines humor, insight and practicality to create a rich toolbox of skills for the novice as well as the more seasoned parents of teenagers. Step Parenting

Step Parenting

In an era when teachers commonly report that up to half of the children in their classes come from multiple homes and have multiple caretakers, the special psychological challenges of stepparenting have never been in greater need of examination. As thoughtful clinicians have long known, stepparenting is among the most complicated of psychological projects: it may simultaneously be a multifaceted burden and a spur to personal autonomy, deepened sensitivity to others, and newfound competence as a nurturer. Among the thousands of divorced people who remarry each year, most – despite their best resolve to live in the present – persist in reassessing the price of separation, especially as they come to appreciate the fact that divorce is seldom a total break for their children. Stepparenting is a comprehensive exploration of the process of reconstructing families. More specifically, it is a book about the perils and promise of stepparenting, a caretaking role that may be more challenging than biologically given child rearing. Contributors follow people as they try to reevaluate past misunderstandings and acclimate to new parenting contexts and obligations. Editors Cath and Shopper have taken pains to offer a balanced purview that includes both successful and maladaptive instances of stepparenting. Of special note are the clincal examples throughout the book that chart the extended periods of slow, creative learning experienced by parents and children, biological and step, as they test the waters of new family systems and try to elicit newly attuned responses from each other.

The Claims of Parenting

The Claims of Parenting

$159

Many sociological, historical and cultural stories can be and have already been told about why it is that parents in post-industrial, western societies face an often overwhelming array of advice on how to bring up their children. At the same time, there have been several philosophical treatments of the legal, moral and political issues surrounding issues of procreation, the rights of children and the duties of parents, as well as some philosophical accounts of the shifts in our underlying conceptualization of childhood and adult-child relationships. While this book partly builds on the insights of this literature, it is significantly different in that it offers a philosophically-informed discussion of the actual practical experience of being a parent, with its deliberations, judgements and dilemmas. In probing the ethical and conceptual questions suggested by the  parent-child relationship, this unique volume demonstrates the irreducible philosophical richness of this relationship and thus provides an important counter-balance to the overly empirical and largely psychological focus of a great deal of “parenting” literature. Unlike other analytic work on the parent-child relationship and the educational role of parents, this work draws on first-person accounts of the day-to-day experience of being a parent in order to explore the ethical and epistemological aspects of this experience. In so doing it exposes the limitations of some of the languages within which contemporary “parenting” is conceptualized and discussed, and opens up a space for thinking about childrearing and the parent-child relationship beyond and other than in terms of the languages which dominate the ways in which we generally think about it today.

Handbook of Parenting: Volume 5: Practical Issues in Parenting

Handbook of Parenting: Volume 5: Practical Issues in Parenting

$6.14

Completely revised and expanded from four to five volumes, this new edition of the "Handbook of Parenting" appears at a time that is momentous in the history of parenting. Parenting and the family are today in a greater state of flux, question, and redefinition than perhaps ever before. We are witnessing the emergence of striking permutations on the theme of parenting: blended families, lesbian and gay parents, and teen versus fifties first-time moms and dads. One cannot but be awed on the biological front by technology that now not only renders postmenopausal women capable of childbearing, but also presents us with the possibility of designing babies. Similarly on the sociological front, single parenthood is a modern day fact of life, adult child dependency is on the rise, and parents are ever less certain of their own roles, even in the face of rising environmental and institutional demands that they take increasing responsibility for their offspring. The "Handbook of Parenting" concerns itself with: *different types of parents–mothers and fathers, single, adolescent, and adoptive parents; *basic characteristics of parenting–behaviors, knowledge, beliefs, and expectations about parenting; *forces that shape parenting–evolution, genetics, biology, employment, social class, culture, environment, and history; *problems faced by parents–handicap, marital difficulties, drug addiction; and *practical concerns of parenting–how to promote children’s health, foster social adjustment and cognitive competence, and interact with school, legal, and public officials. Contributors to the "Handbook of Parenting" have worked in different ways toward understanding all these diverse aspects of parenting, and all look to the most recent research and thinking in the field to shed light on many topics every parent wonders about. Each chapter addresses a different but central topic in parenting; each is rooted in current thinking and theory, as well as classical and modern research in that topic; each has been written to be read and absorbed in a single sitting. In addition, each chapter follows a standard organization, including an introduction to the chapter as a whole, followed by historical considerations of the topic, a discussion of central issues and theory, a review of classical and modern research, forecasts of future directions of theory and research, and a set of conclusions. Of course, contributors’ own convictions and research are considered, but contributions to this new edition present all major points of view and central lines of inquiry and interpret them broadly. The "Handbook of Parenting" is intended to be both comprehensive and state of the art. As the expanded scope of this second edition amply shows, parenting is naturally and closely allied with many other fields.

In the Workshop of History

Those concerned with the practice of history as a discipline and as an intellectual activity will be intrigued by the view of history that Francois Furet offers in this collection of essays. After twenty-five years as a professional historian at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes and in the ranks of the Annales school, Furet sets out to reexamine the methodological and intellectual cleavages that exist today among historians. Furet views history as a field bounded at each end by two ideal types. One end is concerned with the history of periods and with the empiricism of "facts" rather than received ideas. At the other end is problem-oriented history, which substitutes for the supposed coherence of a "period" the analytical examination of a question. Furet’s own work leans toward the second, more conceptually oriented kind of historiography. The essays in this volume, most of them never before published in English, illustrate the breadth of his approach. Furet’s discussion ranges through Tocqueville’s conceptual system to present-day America, from the origins of history in France to the Jewish experience in the late twentieth century. Among Furet’s recurrent themes is the contention that the historian constructs the object or field of his research rather than receiving it from the past.
